Saigon is changing so fast these days it can be difficult to recall what the city looked like in 2008, let alone 1968.

The below collection of pictures, shared by Flickr user manhai, was taken by Darrel Lang from 1968-1969. Lang was a US service member stationed in the city, and his images portray both busy downtown streets and quiet country lanes.

While much has changed in the intervening decades, Lang's shots of one of Saigon's canals, and the slum housing along it, look similar to certain parts of the city today.

2. [PHOTOS] PEOPLE IN 1973 SAI GON

Life in Saigon in the early 1970s wasn’t easy, but that didn’t stop the city’s residents from adopting a positive outlook and happy-go-lucky approach to living. You will never be as cool as the ladies of Saigon in 1973.

In this huge collection of snapshots, photographer Nick DeWolf spent much of his time in Saigon documenting the fast-paced life of its residents. From ladies in áo dài to families on Vespas, it seems that Saigon’s busy schedule has been in place for decades.
